Which nozzle for which hose?

Match blast nozzle bore to blast-hose ID and compressor CFM. BLAST APEX pairings for Models 150 to 2001-R, and why an undersize hose kills production.

Home / Technical guides / Which nozzle for which hose?

Engineers search “which nozzle for which hose” because the kit is a series of restrictions: compressor → air hose → pot → blast hose → nozzle. The nozzle orifice sets how much air leaves the system. The blast hose ID must be large enough that friction does not steal pressure before the nozzle.

Rule of thumb used on tank and hull jobs: blast-hose ID about three times the nozzle orifice, and a still larger air (bull) hose from compressor to pot. BLAST APEX portable pots already pair nozzle, hose ID and hose length in the catalogue. Use that pairing. Do not mix a 12 mm nozzle onto a 19 mm hose.

  • Keep the pot close to the blaster. Long blast hose drops pressure.
  • Keep the compressor close to the pot. Long, skinny air hose drops CFM.
  • Full-flow couplings. Tiny quick-connects choke a 135 CFM setup.
  • Measure nozzle bore with a gauge. Replace when it has grown about 1.5 mm over nominal.

We stock tungsten carbide nozzles and 19 mm blast hose as spares. Larger hose IDs ship with the matching pot. WhatsApp the model number and we confirm the kit.

Engineer FAQs

What hose ID for an 8 mm nozzle?

BLAST APEX Model 501-R / 601-R use an 8 mm nozzle with 25 mm (1") blast-hose ID. A 19 mm hose on an 8 mm nozzle chokes air and media.

Why does a worn nozzle need more air?

Abrasive enlarges the bore. Each step up in orifice size jumps CFM demand. Replace the nozzle before it grows to the next size or the compressor will starve.
