Hose pressure drop

PSI lost in 19, 25, 32 and 38 mm blast hose against #4, #6 and #8 nozzles. Match hose ID to the nozzle or the pot lies about its pressure.

Air scrapes the hose wall. A small ID with a large nozzle makes turbulence and dumps PSI before the tip. Gauge at the pot then reads high while the steel stays dirty.

Typical loss on a working length (order of magnitude)

Hose ID#4 nozzle#6 nozzle#8 nozzle
19 mm (3/4 in)3.5 PSI11 PSIDo not use
25 mm (1 in)1.5 PSI4.5 PSI9.5 PSI
32 mm (1-1/4 in)0.5 PSI1.5 PSI3 PSI
38 mm (1-1/2 in)Negligible0.5 PSI1.5 PSI

BLAST APEX blast hose is 19 mm ID as the stock listing. Larger ID is quoted to the nozzle on the pot. Conductive lining is required so static does not spark in dusty work.

Engineer FAQs

Can I run an 8 mm nozzle on 19 mm hose?

No for production work. Friction drop is severe. Use 25 mm ID at least, 32 mm on long shipyard runs.

How long can the hose be?

Keep it as short as the job allows. After about 30 m, step hose ID up. A receiver near the pot helps the nozzle, not a longer skinny hose.
